In 1987, he became the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church located in Lithonia, Georgia, and significantly grew the church membership from 300 to an estimated 25,000.
Long authored several books during his time as a pastor, contributing to his wealth. He also hosted the funeral of Coretta Scott King, widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr, which was attended by respected personalities including Presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush.
However, Long faced controversies as well. In 2005, he was accused of misusing revenues from his charity and in 2007, of being one of the most homophobic leaders of a religious organization. Furthermore, he was the subject of criminal complaints for sexual abuse in 2010, which were settled out of court. In his personal life, Long was married twice and had four children. He died on January 15, 2017, reportedly from cancer.
